Live, Punk, Hacker and Digital Sociology: Shaking Up the Discipline?

Jean Martin Room, Level 3, Beryl Rawson Building (#13), Ellery Crescent, The Australian National University

Professor Deborah Lupton, Centenary Research Professor, News & Media Research Centre, Faculty of Arts & Design, University of Canberra

In this presentation I will draw upon some of the main themes in my recently completed book Digital Sociology (Routledge). I will focus on particular on the ways in which digital sociology engages with and builds upon recent calls for sociologists to move beyond what are viewed as moribund (or 'zombie', in the words of Les Back) approaches. Back uses the term 'live sociology', while Beer prefers to argue for a 'punk sociology', and in my book I refer to 'hacker sociology'. All three concepts privilege the use of and research into digital technologies as contributing to a newer, fresher approach to sociological research and theorising.
